Long Term Care Insurance

PRESERVING CHOICE AND DIGNITY WHEN YOU NEED CARE
If you ever have a long-term care illness, a chronic condition or Alzheimer’s disease, you may need help with things like bathing, dressing and eating.  Your family may want to help you, but they may not be physically able to provide care or their busy schedules may make it difficult to devote enough time to your needs.  Aides can come into your home, but these costs are not usually covered by ordinary health insurance policies and Medicare.  These expenses can quickly deplete your nest egg, no matter how much you’ve saved.  This is when long term care insurance can help.

Do you need Long Term Care (LTC) Insurance?

If you can’t take care of yourself when you are old, there is plenty of help to choose from:  home health services, adult day-care centers, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes.  Finding the money to pay for such help, however, can be costly.

Right now, the average rate for a private room in a nursing home is $181 a day or higher, or about $66,000 a year, according to a 2003 survey by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.  If the room rates reflect current annual increases in nursing home costs, then by 2021, when today’s 60 year olds might need such care, the average rate with have risen to about $480 a day, or $175,000 annually.  Few people are able to amass such sums.  And, the government is unlikely to pick up the tab.  The only answer is long term care insurance, a disability plan that has been around since the mid-1980s.

According to the US Department of Health and Humana Services, at least 70% of people over 65 will now require some long term care services at some point in their lives, and, due to advances in medicine, that number is expected to grow.  And, contrary to what many people believe, Medicare and private health insurance do not pay for the majority of long term care services that most people need – help with personal care such as dressing, or using the bathroom independently.  Alzheimers is another serious issue.  Planning is essential for you to get the care you need.

Who Pays for Long Term Care?

Many people are under the impression that Medicare, Medicaid, or their health insurance will pay their long tem care costs. The truth is, Medicare has eligibility requirements for skilled nursing care only and is for a limited time period.  Medicaid is a welfare program, and it will not cover long term health care costs for the average American.  Health insurance does not cover long term care.  Individuals and families, through their savings, assets and cash pay for most of the long term care needs.  Without long term care insurance coverage, the financial and emotional ramifications could be devastating.  Having long term care coverage gives you control over your income and assets, and, your care choices.
